From Middle High German geschoȥ, Old High German giscoȥ, derivation of the equivalent of schießen (“to shoot”), i.e. "that which is shot (a projectile)". The "floor, story" sense follows a semantic development "to shoot" > "to shoot up, go up quickly in height" > "levels of height" > "floor, story".
