First attested as in villa ghestre and apud ghesteren in 1298-1304. Potentially derived from a compound of geest (“elevated sandy land”) and Old Dutch *wari (“inhabitants”) or heri (“sandy ridge”). Compare Geesteren and Geijsteren.
