=== Etymology ===
Said to derive from alliances between Galindians and the Visigoths on the latter's marches to Spain; see Galindians, a name of Baltic origin. Other theories give the name a Germanic origin, joining the widely used particle *gaizaz, meaning "spear" (which Gothic renders *Gais, *Gair), and the particle *win, meaning "friend".
