From Middle High German gülle (“puddle”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *guljō, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeyh₁- (“to gape, yawn”), whence Proto-Germanic *gīnaną.
Cognate with German Gülle (“liquid manure”), Cimbrian gülla (“vomit”), also Middle Low German gōle (“swamp”), Swedish göl (“puddle”), dialectal Norwegian gyl (“cleft”), and Finnish kulju (“quagmire”) (which was borrowed from North Germanic).
