Possibly from various sources, often based on Old High German vorha (“pine”) suffixed with -heim (“home”). Older forms include Middle High German Vorchheim, Middle High German Vorchaim or Old High German Vorechheim.
In the 13th century, folk etymology suggested Old High German vorhe (“trout”) as root for the Bavarian town Forchheim.
