Filipino as a person used to refer to a male Philippine-born person of pure or majority Spanish descent, just like the term insulares (from the plural of Spanish insular), during the Spanish era of the Philippines, until it was applied to all the citizens of the Philippines as a nationality of the First Philippine Republic after the Philippine Revolution in 1898. The term was eventually spelled as Pilipino using the Abakada alphabet in the early 20th century. In 2013, after the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF) issued its resolution to rename the country from Pilipinas to Filipinas, it also promoted the use of Filipino instead of Pilipino to refer to a Filipino person and the adjective pertaining to the Philippines.
