=== Etymology ===
Usually thought to have come from fen (“fen”), thus meaning "fen-dweller". This leaves the -rir suffix unexplained, which does not occur in any other words.
An alternative proposal derives it from a hypothetical *fenr (“food”, z-stem) + -ir (agent/associative suffix), thus meaning "feeder". The base *fenr would derive from Proto-Germanic *fenaz ~ *finiz-, from Proto-Indo-European *pen-. Cognates would include Latin penus (“food”), Lithuanian penė́ti (“to feed”).
