Probably from an older form corresponding to Old Norse Eyvindarnes, from the genitive of Eyvindr (“male given name”) + nes (“headland, promontory”), literally “Eyvindr's headland”. The name is also recorded in older written forms such as Evindnæs and Eivindnæs; a 16th-century spelling is recorded as Offuene.
