=== Etymology 1 ===
Borrowed from Latin Eurōpa, from Ancient Greek Εὐρώπη (Eurṓpē), used in Ancient Greek both as a geographical name and as the name of a mythological figure. The ultimate origin is uncertain and probably Pre-Greek. The geographical and mythological uses may ultimately represent the same name, but a direct historical connection between them has not been established. The traditional interpretation of the mythological name as εὐρύς (eurús, “wide, broad”) + ὤψ (ṓps, “eye, face”) is uncertain, as are proposed connections with Semitic words meaning “evening” or “west”.
Compare Danish Europa, Swedish Europa, German Europa, Dutch Europa and English Europe.
