=== Etymology ===
From Middle High German ertapfel, erdapfel, ertöpfel, erdöpfel, ertaphel (“mandrake, cucumber, pumpkin, melon”), from Old High German erdapful, erdaphul (“pumpkin, squash, melon”), from Proto-West Germanic *erþapplu, equivalent to Erde (“earth”) + Apfel (“apple”). Cognate with Dutch aardappel (“potato”), Low German Eerappel, Eerdappel (“potato”) and West Frisian ierappel (“potato”). Modern sense probably a calque of French pomme de terre (“potato”).
