First attested as Braeckrijk in 1681. Named after a former estate. Originally a compound of braak (“breach”) and rijk (“realm”), currently a compound of els (“alder, Alnus sp.”) and rijk. The estate was renamed by one of its owners, Symon Elskamp, as a jocular reference to his surname.
