From ellan (“courage”) + *ruod, ultimately derived from Proto-West Germanic *alljan + *hrōþi (“fame, renown”), only in Upper High German from the 8th C.. The regular onomastic base from this root is Proto-West Germanic *alljā (ōn-stem), and Upper German compound form ellan- may simply be the oblique case, and not directly from *alljan. First attested in the 9th C. CE
