== Old High German == === Etymology === From ellan (“courage”) +‎ *ruod, ultimately derived from Proto-West Germanic *alljan +‎ *hrōþi (“fame, renown”), only in Upper High German from the 8th C.. The regular onomastic base from this root is Proto-West Germanic *alljā (ōn-stem), and Upper German compound form ellan- may simply be the oblique case, and not directly from *alljan.
