First attested in 1568 in the Bishops' Bible translation (see quotations); earlier English Bible translations instead used “of Elkosh”. From Middle English Helcesei, borrowed from Vulgar Latin Helcesei, from Ancient Greek Έλκεσαίου (Élkesaíou), from Hebrew אֶלְקֹשִׁי.
Analysable as Elkosh (“the unidentified birthplace or residence of the minor prophet Nahum”) + -ite.
