Eldəniz

Eldəgəz, Eldəgiz, Elgiz
=== Etymology ===
By surface analysis, el + dəniz, but etymologically from a misreading of Classical Azerbaijani ایلدکز (eldigüz), where the second element was mistaken for دکز (dəŋiz), as a result of the fact that the letter ک could represent both /g/ and /ŋ/. The first element was indeed Azerbaijani el, while the second element was possibly also found in the given name [script needed] (gündigüz). The name was also historically attested in other languages as Middle Armenian Ելտկուզ (Eltkuz), Middle Georgian [Term?], and Classical Persian ایلْدِگُز (ēldiguz), ایلْدُگُز (ēlduguz). Compare Turkish İldeniz.

Vladimir Minorsky (1953), “New Light on the Shaddadids of Ganja”, in Studies in Caucasian History[1] (in English), Cambridge University Press, →ISBN, page 92: “[Eldigüz] is the reading of the name supported by Georgian and Armenian transcriptions. Cf. in I. Arthir, X, 201, another similar name k.nd.k.z (*gün-digüz?). The reading El-deniz (A. Z. Togan) is obviously modernizing and impossible.”
