New Latin, from Ancient Greek ἐλαφῆ (elaphê, “deerskin”), related to ἔλαφος (élaphos, “deer”). A reference to Italian serpente cervone (literally “deer snake”), the vernacular name of the type species Elaphe quatuorlineata.
