Ca. 1800, from Bavarian and Alemannic German dialects. By surface analysis, ein (“one”) + Baum (“tree”). Perhaps backformed from the adjective *einbäumig, *einbäumen (“made of one tree”) attested in Old High German einboumig, Middle Low German ênbômen, Old English ānbȳme.
