Inherited from Ottoman Turkish آجه آباد (Ece Âbâd). Possibly from Ece (a given name) + abat (“flourishing, prosperous [place]”), named after Ece Bey, who played a role in conquering the city and settled there. Alternatively, from Arabic حِجَابَات (ḥijābāt), a military term indicating the most forward command point on the battlefield; cf. hicap.
