Alteration of the surname Coppett, from Middle English coppet, copped (literally “peaked, headed”), an adjective which also had the secondary meaning of "haughty". Thence, a nickname for a haughty person.
Middle English copped is a derivative of Middle English cop (“top, summit, crown of the head”), a word inherited from Old English copp (“top, summit, round head”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *kuppaz (“crown of the head, hilltop, orb, bowl”).
