Attested as Cronensteyn in the 16th century. Likely from van Cronenburgh (a noble surname) + -stein (“stone building, castle”). Named after a polder, which was named in turn after a manor named after noblewoman Elisabeth van Cronenburgh by her husband, Floris van Alckemade.
