coteau + du + lac. Literally, “hillside of the lake”. From Côteau-du-Lac, inherited from Middle French Costeau du Lac. Coined by French aristocrat, soldier, politician and Governor-General of New France Jacques-René de Brisay de Denonville, Marquis de Denonville, in 1687. From being a hillside off of Lake Saint Francis (Lac Saint-François) on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River (Fleuve Saint-Laurent).
