From Latin Cōnfūcius (“Confucius”) + -ornis (“bird”, from Ancient Greek ὄρνῑς (órnīs)). Coined by Chinese ornithologist and paleontologist Lianhai Hou, Chinese paleontologist Zhou Zhonghe, ornithologist Yucai Gu and Chinese paleornithologist Jiangyong Zhang in 1995.
