=== Etymology ===
Uncertain. Likely an adapted borrowing from Calabro-Sicilian cuccumeli (“honeyberry”).
If so possibly from an unattested *kokkýmēl(i)on, from Ancient Greek κοκκύμηλον (kokkúmēlon, “plum”), apparently derived from κόκκῡξ (kókkūx, “early ripening fig”) + μῆλον (mêlon, “apple, any fruit from a tree”). Cf. κόκκος (kókkos) for more. Compare the Greek Κουκουμέλης (Koukoumélis), a surname. Akin to Scognamiglio.
