Evidently from Ancient Greek κλάγγος (klángos), an alternate reading of πλάγγος (plángos, “a kind of eagle”), though some sources (following Willughby, 1676) instead posit a relationship to Ancient Greek κλαγγή (klangḗ, “clash”) or Latin clangō (“to clang; (of an eagle) to scream”).
