== Latin == === Etymology === Unclear. The name is also attested in Ancient Greek as Κισσωνία (Kissōnía). It has been suggested that the god's name could mean "carriage-driver" (compare cissum (“carriage”), said to be derived from Gaulish). A possible connection (perhaps through Aquitanian) to Proto-Basque *gizoN (“man, human”) has been suggested for the given name, though it being in use so far afield from Aquitania may make this unlikely. === Pronunciation === (Classical Latin) IPA(key): [kɪsˈsoː.ni.ʊs] (modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) IPA(key): [t͡ʃisˈsɔː.ni.us] === Proper noun === Cissōnius m sg (genitive Cissōniī or Cissōnī); second declension a Celtic god associated with Mercury a male given name Coordinate term: (female equivalent) Cissonia ==== Declension ==== Second-declension noun, singular only. 1Found in older Latin (until the Augustan Age). === References === “Cissonius”, in Gaffiot, Félix (1934), Dictionnaire illustré latin-français, Hachette.
