Borrowed from Latin chthonius (“underworldly”), itself borrowed from Ancient Greek χθόνῐος (khthónĭos, “underground, subterranean”). Further from χθών (khthṓn, “the ground, soil”), from Proto-Hellenic *kʰtʰṓn and Proto-Indo-European *dʰéǵʰōm (“ground”).
Coined by German entomologist and arachnologist Carl Ludwig Koch in 1843.
