Borrowed from Arabic قَلْعَة (qalʕa) and a not-well-attested element, namely said to be شِبِثّ (šibiṯṯ, “anise”). Doublet of Calascibbetta.
=== Pronunciation ===
IPA(key): /ˌka.la.ʃʃɪbˈbɛt.ta/
Hyphenation: Ca‧la‧scib‧bèt‧ta
=== Proper noun ===
Calaxibbetta m
Calascibetta (a town, in Sicily, Italy)
==== Usage notes ====
The grapheme ⟨x⟩ is here employed for /ʃ/ as many instances of /ʃ/ in Old Sicilian do derive from a Latin x, as for example coscia, otherwise this symbol has however been used to adopt borrowings from foreign languages. The grapheme was also widely used in Ibero-Romance languages with the same scope.
