From Middle High German buode, from Old High German *buoda, from Proto-West Germanic *bōþu, from Proto-Germanic *bōþō. Probably related to *būaną (“to build”), whence German bauen. Cognate with Middle Dutch boede, Middle Low German bôde, Old Norse búð, bóð, whence English booth.
