=== Etymology ===
First attested as bruheze in 1300. Compound of Middle Dutch bru (“slop, sludge, mud”) and hese (“brushwood”) (see Old Dutch *hēsi (“brushwood”)). The toponym was later reinterpreted as brouwhuis (“brewery”). Compare Breudijk and Bruinisse. Formerly an independent village.
