Borrowed from either Ancient Greek βρόμιος (brómios, “very loud”) or Βρόμιος (Brómios, another name for Bacchus, from the adjective). Further from βρόμος (brómos, “loud noise”) and βρέμω (brémō, “to make a loud noise”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrem- (“to make noise”).
Coined by French entomologist Louis Alexandre Auguste Chevrolat in 1836.
