From Middle Low German brāke +‎ Middle Low German wēde from Proto-West Germanic *brāku f (“fallow, Brache”) and Proto-West Germanic *widu m (“wood”), referencing grazing grounds on slopes adjacent to forests allegedly recognizable until the twentieth century.
