First attested in 1029. From Middle Low German brāke + Middle Low German wēde from Proto-West Germanic *brāku f (“fallow, Brache”) and Proto-West Germanic *widu m (“wood”), referencing grazing grounds on slopes adjacent to forests allegedly recognizable until the twentieth century. Incorporated into Bielefeld from 1 January 1973 due to urbanization.
