The hyphenated spelling (Black-Box) is proscribed. Blackbox refers especially to the protective box, while Flugschreiber refers especially to the recorders inside of it. Hence, die Blackbox bergen (“to recover the black box”), but den Flugschreiber auswerten (“to analyse the flight recorder”). Nevertheless, both terms are also used interchangeably.
