Potentially attested as breitenfurt in 944, attested with certainty as berdawird in 1417. Borrowed from West Frisian Burdaard, derived in turn from a compound of either Old Frisian bird (“shore, edge”) or brēd (“broad, wide”) and uurð (“terp, artificial mound used for habitation”).
