From Early New High German beugel, from an unattested diminutive of Middle High German bouc, boug- (“ring, bracelet”), from Old High German boug (“ring”), from Proto-West Germanic *baug, from Proto-Germanic *baugaz (“ring”). Doublet of Bagel, also related to beugen and Bügel. Cognate of Yiddish בייגל (beygl) (whence English bagel), and Dutch beugel.
