As a Norwegian surname, from several farms in Norway, from Old Norse bjarg (“mountain”) or ber (“berry”) + land. As a Jewish surname, variant of Brillant, from Yiddish בריליאַנט (brilyant, “jewel, diamond”), itself from French brillant (“shining”).
