Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese Badalhouce, ultimately from Latin Pācem Augustam through either Mozarabic or Arabic بَطَلْيَوْس (baṭalyaws). Was displaced by the Spanish Badajoz around the time of the Philippine Dynasty (1581–1640).
