Named after the Arve River, of uncertain origin, possibly a Celtic name from Proto-Celtic *garwos (“violent, rough, bumpy”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“to bristle”). Compare Welsh garw (“rough, bumpy”) and Irish garbh.
