Austria

== English == === Etymology === From Latin Austria, a Latinization of Old High German Ōstarrīhhi, the first element of which means "east" and stems from Proto-Germanic *austraz (“eastern”), and the second element of which is rīhhi (“realm”). See east, eastern for more. Distantly cognate to Australia: it derives from the same Proto-Indo-European root, but via Latin, where it came to mean “south” rather than “east”. Compare also Austrasia. === Pronunciation === (Received Pronunciation) IPA(key): /ˈɒs.tɹɪə/ (Received Pronunciation, dated) IPA(key): /ˈɔːs.tɹɪə/ (General American) IPA(key): /ˈɔs.tɹi.ə/ (cot–caught merger) IPA(key): /ˈɑs.tɹi.ə/ (Philippines) IPA(key): /ˈɔs.tɹi.jɐ/ Hyphenation: Aus‧tria === Proper noun === Austria A country in Central Europe. The first element of the High German word is Proto-Germanic *austraz (“eastern”), cognate with Latin auster, but of different sense. The formation nevertheless makes sense because Austria is located in the south-east of the German-speaking lands. === Pronunciation === (Classical Latin) IPA(key): [ˈau̯s.tri.a] (modern Italianate Ecclesiastical) IPA(key): [ˈau̯s.tri.a] === Proper noun === Austria f sg (genitive Austriae); first declension (New Latin) Austria (a country in Central Europe) ==== Declension ==== First-declension noun, singular only. ==== Derived terms ==== ==== See also ==== === Further reading === Austria on the Latin Wikipedia.Wikipedia la == Polish == === Etymology === Learned borrowing from Latin Austria. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈaws.trja/ Rhymes: -awstrja Syllabification: Aus‧tria === Proper noun === Austria f Austria (a country in Central Europe) ==== Declension ==== ==== Related terms ==== === See also === === Further reading === Austria in Wielki słownik języka polskiego, Instytut Języka Polskiego PAN Austria in Polish dictionaries at PWN == Portuguese == === Proper noun === Austria f pre-reform spelling (used until 1943 in Brazil and 1911 in Portugal) of Áustria == Romanian == === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈaws.tri.(j)a/ === Proper noun === Austria f Austria (a country in Central Europe) ==== Declension ==== === See also === == Spanish == === Etymology === Borrowed from Latin Austria, a Latinization of Old High German Ostarrîchi, from an element meaning "east" (Proto-Germanic *austrą, compare Swedish öster) + rīhhi (“realm”) (compare modern German Reich (“realm”)). === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈaustɾja/ [ˈau̯s.t̪ɾja] Rhymes: -austɾja Syllabification: Aus‧tria === Proper noun === Austria f Austria (a country in Central Europe) ==== Derived terms ==== ==== Related terms ==== austriaco, austriaca Austria-Hungría, austro-húngaro, austro-húngara === See also === == Swahili == === Pronunciation === === Proper noun === Austria Austria (a country in Central Europe) == Tagalog == === Proper noun === Áustriá (Baybayin spelling ᜀᜏ᜔ᜐ᜔ᜆ᜔ᜇᜒᜌ) alternative spelling of Awstriya: Austria (a country in Central Europe) == Western Huasteca Nahuatl == === Proper noun === Austria Austria (a country in Central Europe)
