Aunus

=== Etymology ===
Unknown. Cognate with Livvi Anus. Some old attestations suggest may have originally been closer to *Agnis or *Agnus: Agnismaa (1587), Agnesma (1612), Augnisma (1657), but also compare Auniszmaa (1590). Possibly from a substrate or a lost given name. Alternatively, some older forms seem to support an original -l- (e.g. Алоньсь (Alonĭsĭ)), in which case the name may be from an earlier form like *alanus (meaning something like “lowland”), perhaps from Veps which is known for l-vocalization (l > u) after some vowels.
