(2006), Birds of the World: Recommended English Names, Princeton University Press, →ISBN == English == === Etymology === Borrowed from Ancient Greek Ἀττίλα (Attíla), of uncertain further origin. Traditionally thought to have been derived from East Germanic, such as a Gothic *𐌰𐍄𐍄𐌹𐌻𐌰 (*attila, literally “little father”), from 𐌰𐍄𐍄𐌰 (atta, “father”) + -𐌹𐌻𐌰 (-ila). Displaced native Old English Ætla. A more recent explanation by Bonnman-Fries (2025) suggests a Yeniseian origin, specifically an Arinic language. The proper name is explained as deriving from a Common Yeniseian adjective complex *atɨ-λa (“quite swift, quite fast”); see there for more. Compare also Bactrian Χιγγιλο (Khingilo), Brahmi 𑀔𑀺𑀗𑁆𑀕𑀺𑀮 (Khiṇgila), the name of a leader of the Alchon Huns, which could prove that the diminutive -ila is of Hunnic origin. === Pronunciation === (General American) IPA(key): /əˈtɪlə/ === Proper noun === Attila (historical) A king of the tribes of Huns. ==== Derived terms ==== Attila the Hun ==== Translations ==== === References === === Further reading === Attila the Hun on Wikipedia.Wikipedia === Anagrams === Talati == German == === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈatila/ === Proper noun === Attila m (proper noun, strong, genitive Attilas) Attila Synonym: (archaic) Etzel == Hungarian == === Pronunciation === IPA(key): [ˈɒtilːɒ] (phonetic respelling: Atilla) Rhymes: -lɒ Hyphenation: At‧ti‧la === Proper noun === Attila a male given name (historical) Attila the Hun (kingly ruler of the tribe of the Huns and vast Eurasian Hunnic Empire and feared enemy of the Roman Empire, from 434 until his death in 453) ==== Declension ==== ==== Derived terms ==== == Italian == === Proper noun === Attila m a male given name a king of the tribes of Huns === Anagrams === latita, lattai, talità
