== Dutch == === Etymology === First attested as hasle in 814-815. Etymology uncertain. Possible etymologies include a compound derived from Proto-Germanic *hasi- (“brushwood”) and lo (“light forest”) or a derivation from hazel (“common hazel, Corylus avellana”). A third etymology proposes that the initial H- in the earliest attestations is an insertion and that the toponym may actually derive from as (“European ash, Fraxinus excelsior”).
