== Dutch == === Etymology === First attested as asperen in 893. Etymology uncertain. One proposed etymology interprets the name as a derivation from a hydronym in turn derived from Old Dutch aspa (“aspen, Populus tremula”) with the suffix -arô-. Hydronyms are rarely derived from tree names, however. It is more likely that the toponym is derived from an older hydronym Proto-Germanic *Aspurô, which might in turn be derived from *aspa- (“bend, hook”). Compare Afferden, Asper and Asperden. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈɑs.pə.rə(n)/ Hyphenation: As‧pe‧ren === Proper noun === Asperen n a city and former municipality of West Betuwe, Gelderland, Netherlands ==== Derived terms ==== Asperenaar Asperens === References === van Berkel, Gerard; Samplonius, Kees (2018), “Asperen”, in Nederlandse plaatsnamen verklaard‎[1] (in Dutch), Mijnbestseller.nl, →ISBN == Norwegian Nynorsk == === Etymology === Definite form; from Old Norse *Aspir, an ia-derivation of ǫsp f (“aspen”). === Pronunciation === (Austfold) IPA(key): /²aspəɳ/ === Proper noun === Asperen m a lake in Aremark, Østfold, Norway
