From Latin aristolochia, from Ancient Greek ἀριστολόχεια (aristolókheia), from ἄριστος (áristos, “best”) + λοχεία (lokheía, “childbirth, childbed”). In ancient times the plant was thought to be effective against infections caused by childbirth.
