== English == === Etymology === From Annam +‎ -ese. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˌæn.əˈmiz/ === Proper noun === Annamese (obsolete, uncountable) A former name of the Vietnamese language. ==== Synonyms ==== Annamite ==== Translations ==== === Noun === Annamese (plural Annamese) (countable) A native or inhabitant of Annam (or Vietnam). ==== Usage notes ==== As with other terms for people formed with -ese, the countable singular noun in reference to a person (as in "I am an Annamese", "writing about Annamese cuisine as an Annamese") is now uncommon and often taken as grammatically incorrect. In its place, the adjective is used, by itself (as in "I am Annamese") or before a noun like person, man, or woman ("writing about Annamese cuisine as an Annamese person"). See also -ish, which is similarly only primarily used as an adjective or as a plural noun. ==== Synonyms ==== Annamite ==== Translations ==== === Adjective === Annamese (not comparable) Pertaining to Annam. ==== Synonyms ==== Annamite ==== Translations ====
