Originally spelled as Anadyomena. Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἀναδυόμενη (anaduómenē, “emerging, rising”), an epithet of Aphrodite, who is known to be created by rising from the ocean (e.g. Venus Anadyomene).
Coined by French biologist and naturalist Jean Vincent Félix Lamouroux in 1812 (as Anadyomena).
