Named after the governor of the Visayas, Henry Tureman Allen. The town's name was changed from Minapa-a to La Granja during the Spanish Occupation of the Philippines. It was renamed shortly as Tanaman, in an effort of eradicating all traces of Anglo-Saxon influence in East Asia by the Japanese, during the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines.
