Unknown; Altenecote in 1202. Possibly a Cumbric compound from the equivalents of Welsh allt (“cliff”) (+ a diminutive suffix) + the definite article y + coed (“wood, forest”). The final syllable seems to have been influenced by Old English cot (“cottage”).
