Ahvenanmaa

== Finnish == === Etymology === Unclear; one theory derives the name from Proto-Norse *ᚨᚺᚹᚢᛚᚨᛞᚨ (*ahwulada), the first part of which the Finnic peoples would have associated with ahven (“perch”). According to the same theory the Swedish name of the islands, Åland, would come from the same origin. Another theory, proposed by Schalin (2008), is that the word was originally borrowed from early Proto-Germanic *agwiōz (“archipelago”) into Proto-Finnic as *ahvëh or *ahvë- and then re-borrowed back into Proto-Norse as [script needed] (ahwē) or [script needed] (ahwe), which would later become *ā- in Old Swedish *āland > Swedish Åland. === Pronunciation === IPA(key): /ˈɑhʋenɑnˌmɑː/, [ˈɑ̝xʋe̞nɑ̝mˌmɑ̝ː] Rhymes: -ɑː Syllabification(key): Ah‧ve‧nan‧maa Hyphenation(key): Ah‧venan‧maa === Proper noun === Ahvenanmaa Aland, Åland (archipelago and autonomous province of Finland located southwest of the Finnish mainland) ==== Declension ==== The external locative cases (adessive, allative and ablative) are used with this place name when referring to a location; for example, "in Åland" is Ahvenanmaalla. ==== Derived terms ==== === References ===
