Learned borrowing from Latin -itās. Displaced earlier -itet and -iteit from Dutch -iteit. The displacement was prior to Indonesian-Malaysian orthography reform of 1972 as Indonesian linguist at the time suggest that the earlier forms (-itet and -iteit) felt no longer relevant to this new spelling system.
