Borrowed from Polish szczurek (“little rat, mouse”), diminutive of szczur (“rat”), first mentioned in the 17th century, apparently still as a foreign word; in the 18th century, it had already acquired its present form (but compare dialectal variants žurks, žorks, šurks). Compare Lithuanian žiurkė.
