From Proto-Indo-European *ḱloy-wo-s, ultimately from the root *ḱley-. Compare Proto-Germanic *hlaiw (“barrow”) and Latin clinō (“to incline”). Derksen states that this term is a variant of kleivas where the initial *ḱ- was not depalatalized.
